California businesses will soon face new limits in their use of independent contractors under a closely watched proposal signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday

Fight the opioid epidemic with proactive education and care coordination

Too many Americans have been touched by the opioid epidemic, but hopefully that will start to change soon. Physicians can fight back against this epidemic and save countless lives in the months and years ahead thanks to a heightened awareness among patients and caregivers about the risks, a firm commitment by the medical community to increase adoption of non-opioid pain management options and better coordination across the patient care continuum.

California Ambulatory Surgery Association debuts opioid use toolkit

The toolkit was developed with help from the California Society of Anesthesiologists and includes information for both patients and physicians on pain management, including posters, brochures and videos outlining safe opioid use and prescribing. Information for the materials was derived from policies and research from the American Medical Association, the CDC and HHS.

The Opioid Crisis Is Not About Opioids

Ultimately the “opioid crisis” is not about opioids, it is about addiction and mental health and societal despair. In fact, the majority of drug overdose deaths are due to multiple substances, including alcohol and benzodiazepines, not just opioids. The real crisis we are facing in this country is a substance abuse problem, not an opioid abuse problem.
