WARC and CSA Resident Research Competition
This is a reminder about the CSA Research Competition and Western Anesthesia Residents Conference (WARC). Residents…your program directors and chairs are copied as well, so be sure to underscore this information at your next meeting. Many thanks!
The Educational Programs Division of the California Society of Anesthesiologists (CSA) supports excellence in research for anesthesia training programs. Thanks to the generosity of Abbott Laboratories, the CSA-Abbott Laboratories Resident Research Competition will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2008, during the CSA Annual Meeting held at the Hilton Los Angeles Universal City, California, May 30-June 1, 2008. Three competition winners will receive the CSA-Abbott Laboratories Resident Research Awards: first prize $1,500 and the Evelyn Squier Book Grant of $200; second prize $1,000 and the Linda Herren Book Grant of $200; and third prize $500.
The papers to be presented at the CSA-Abbott Laboratories Residents Research Competition will be selected from those presented by California residents at the 45th Annual Western Anesthesia Residents Conference (WARC). A panel of judges will evaluate the presentations made at WARC and will select six to eight papers from the California institutions for presentation at the 2008 CSA Annual Meeting. The entries will be judged on the basis of scientific merit and the quality of the presentation.
The Virginia Mason Medical Center and the Department of Anesthesiology are the hosts of the 2008 WARC meeting. The WARC meeting will be held at the Seattle Renaissance Hotel, April 25-27, 2008. Hotel reservations can be made directly through the Virginia Mason WARC Web Site: http://www.warc2008.com or by calling the Seattle Renaissance directly at 1-800-546-9184.
Make sure to mention that you are with the Western Anesthesia Residents Conference (WARC) or the Virginia Mason Medical Center. The discounted sleeping room rate only applies until March 21, 2008, so please make your reservations early.
The 2008 WARC conference is open to Medical Students, Residents and Postdoctoral Fellows within the area of anesthesiology - one abstract per person. Information about WARC abstract submissions is available online via:
Eligibility and Application Process for the CSA Research Competition
- Applicants must be a member of the CSA and must be in a residency program in California at a CA 1, 2, 3, or 4 level.
- Applicants must design and carry out the research and submit it, in abstract form, to the Western Anesthesia Residents Conference (WARC).
- All presentations by eligible residents from California anesthesiology training programs at the WARC will be judged by a panel selected by the CSA Educational Programs Division (EPD).
- The top scoring 6-8 eligible residents at WARC will be designated "finalists" and will be invited to repeat their presentations at the CSA Annual Meeting, and when possible their abstracts will be printed in the syllabus.
- At the time of selection as a "finalist," the Chair of the Anesthesiology Department must verify that:
- the individual is currently a resident (CA 1-3) in training or first year Anesthesiology Fellow
- the research has institutional approval (where appropriate)
- the research was planned, performed and the abstract written principally by the applicant.
- At the CSA Annual Meeting, a committee appointed by the EPD will judge the finalists' presentations.
- All finalists will be formally recognized at the plenary session of the CSA Annual Meeting, at which time finalists' plaques will be given and the three top prizes awarded.
If you cannot submit a presentation for the 2008 WARC, I still encourage you to attend the CSA Annual Meeting and Clinical Anesthesia Update to meet your fellow California anesthesiologists. More details regarding the CSA meeting will be available soon on the CSA Web Site at www.csahq.org. We hope to be seeing you and your fellow residents at this year’s WARC!
