The California Society of Anesthesiologists encourages all elected officials and candidates to refrain from politicizing the COVID-19 pandemic or the response of healthcare practitioners, whose primary interest is and always will be the safety and care of our patients. Anesthesiologists have been proud to be on the front lines saving lives during this crisis, leading highly specialized airway intubation teams and flexing into critical care roles.

Sadly, there is evidence of more than 225,000 COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. There is no evidence that these case counts are based on physicians fraudulently diagnosing patients or inflating data. In fact, experts are concerned these numbers underestimate the total impact on mortality and likely undercount the actual number of COVID-19 fatalities.

CSA joins a host of other leading medical organizations criticizing recent political statements suggesting physicians are over-counting COVID-19 cases for financial gain, including the  American Medical Association (AMA), the American College of Physicians (ACP), the American College of Emergency Physicians, the Council of Medical Specialty Societies, the Society for Hospital Medicine, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Many areas of the country are experiencing another increase in COVID-19 cases now. At this time, it is important to share clear, evidence-based information regarding the nature of the pandemic, the level of community transmission, how to stay safe, and how to stem the tide of infections. We encourage the public to follow CDC guidelines to do all they can to reduce transmission of the coronavirus and save lives.
